BUYING GUIDE
Choosing the right fishing reel
Spinning or baitcasting?
Spinning reels are generally approachable for light lures and varied freshwater techniques. Baitcasting reels offer strong line control for many heavier-lure applications but require practice to manage spool overrun.
What to compare
- Size and capacity: match line capacity to species, rod and technique.
- Gear ratio: describes spool or rotor turns per handle turn; actual retrieve rate also depends on spool diameter.
- Drag: prioritize smooth, consistent operation over a large advertised maximum.
- Weight and balance: check comfort when paired with your rod.
- Construction and service: compare corrosion resistance, parts availability and warranty.
Before you buy
Check exact model generation and retrieve-hand orientation. Compare shipping and return terms, not just sticker price. Saltwater exposure requires appropriate cleaning and care even with corrosion-resistant equipment.
